MV/LV Dry Type Transformers

A distinctive element of the dry transformer is the fact that the magnetic circuit and the windings are not immersed in an insulating liquid. It could be MV/LV, MV/MV, or LV/LV with cast coils or resin impregnated coils.

The core is made of high magnetic permeability grain-oriented electrical sheet, with with a 45 degree cut and intercalated step lap joints method. Alternatively, it could be of amorphous type, and which is a crystalline structure that guarantees extremely low losses, up to 4 times lower compared to the standard grain oriented solution.

How can GBE help you?

The MV windings are made with fully automatic machines which insulate the wire or strip, either aluminium or copper, with class F or H insulation materials. The MV windings can be impregnated in polyester resin or cast in epoxy resin. The epoxy resin is loaded with aluminium, silicone and other additives that modify the mechanical characteristics and the TG (transition temperature). This guarantees to meet the most severe climate and environmental classes such as: low temperatures down to -60°C or high temperatures up to +60°C, and any other saline high condensation environment or environment with high pollution as required by the regulations in force for some types of application.

The LV windings are made of aluminium or copper foil or strip, insulated with class F or H materials and vacuum pressure impregnated with class H high cementing polyester resin that gives the coil excellent insulation and mechanical sealing. For special applications the insulation used is the pre-impregnated type and on request can be cast on an epoxy resin mould. The terminals are automatically welded for the whole length of the winding, to provide easy accessibility and high mechanical resistance to electrodynamic stresses.

All steelwork is of GBE production and is galvanised to allow installation in even the most aggressive environments. For some installations, the transformer can be equipped with IP protective box required for indoors or outdoors.

Therefore, GBE production are suitable for installations in hospitals, banks, public and residential buildings, and also on ships, galleries, subways and offshore platforms.

Cast Resin Transformers have at least one of the two windings embedded on an autoclave mould, at vacuum values ​​close to zero with epoxy resin. The other winding can also be cast in epoxy resin or impregnated with H class polyester resin with high cementation.

Cast Resin Transformers have reached a high degree of reliability thanks to the technological advances in recent years. Our production E2, C2, F1, but also E3 (IEC 60076-16) and C4 (GOST-R), can be used in the presence of a high humidity and pollution rate, low installation temperatures even down to -60°C, therefore eliminating the problems related to the risks of fire and emissions of toxic and harmful substances in case of fire.

As they are entirely built with insulating, flame retardant and self-extinguishing materials, they are completely free from all restrictions that should normally be applied to flammable equipment with a danger of spreading fire.

Vacuum Pressure Impregnated (VPI) Transformers

VPI transformers, a new construction concept, are suitable for installations that require particular attention to the environment, with minimum flammable material.

The windings up to 1.1kV class are made in foil or strip in a continuous layer; for higher voltages, the winding is made of disks connected in series or parallel according to the voltage or power of the winding.

The insulation can be used in class F or H and the impregnation is made with class H polyester resin

All production with air insulation has a small amount of flammable material, less of the resin solution and without any term of comparison with the oil solutions.

The transformer impregnated in air is not only suitable for distribution, but also for any type of special applications (such as the resin transformer). There are no particular limitations for the insulation levels, although generally it is not used for classes higher than 36 KV.

This type of transformers can be provided with a protective box, according to the desired IP. The boxes are painted with epoxy paint according to the RAL requested (RAL standard 7032) with pickled or galvanised sheet for outdoor installations.

Special applications for the outdoors include the creation of an aluminium box complete with MV ceramic bushing and LV resin insulators.
